a little birdseed

I bought bird seed at the store today.  Given all of the things going on this week, well, it seemed like a good thing to do. I didn’t rush in to the store. I made myself slow down.  I made eye contact with the people around me, said hi to the clerk who then said, “Welcome to Dollar General…”  A sweet older man said, “Hi”,  then acted surprised and said, “Now aren’t you pretty.”   It was then my turn toRead more

So, mourning doves are not known for their bravery. The doves that regularly visit the feeder on the back deck are no different. They are skittish and usually FLY AWAY FAST when there’s an unexpected sound. They coo as they  fly and usually take a bit of time before they come back. But this mourning dove was different. It stayed as I made pretty loud sounds in the kitchen washing dishes, putting things away, etc. When I did make aRead more

…a few thoughts on preparation…

As many of you are probably aware, the East Coast has had a bit of a storm this week. Hurricane Florence made her presence known and hit Wrightsville Beach on Friday.  (Have I mentioned my son that goes to UNCW lives on Wrightsville Beach?…He can see the ocean from his balcony (or roof as he often does, and feel the wind and ocean air every time he walks out the door.)  I even  have some visuals of his place.  (GotRead more

Still

Troubled Waters

So, I’m really not 100% sure what made this poem pour out of me at 5:45 this morning, but it did. I was kind of struck by looking at a dear friend’s eyes yesterday and seeing one who was troubled, and it stirred that up in me as well. Anyway, I’m not sure if any readers are feeling ‘troubled’ right now, and of course, I hope you aren’t. But if you are, here are a few reminders to not lookRead more

…a few thoughts on beads…

Yesterday, I took a little time out to sort beads. I went outside on the deck to be in the sunlight where I could see the difference between navy blue and black, and dark purple and brown. Amazing the difference of sunlight versus inside light on color. True colors show through so much more in the natural light of the sun. And on the deck, I get fresh air, and hear the birds, and, it’s amazing how people from insideRead more

Like a Crashing Wave~

I could feel it building all day. I could feel it rising in me like a tide that is building and building and building, and before you know it, the calm sea turns into a torrent of crashing waves at high tide that overtake everything in its path.  I was in its path and it was overtaking me fast. As I walked out of my classroom, sirens blared and an ambulance passed the school in a rush of sound andRead more

Storm on the Horizon

It felt as ominous as it looked. The wind had suddenly picked up and the deep blues and dark grays of the clouds swept across the carolina blue sky like a blanket covering all in its path. It’s amazing how a simple one hour drive in the car can all of a sudden feel like a dangerous venture. It did. This storm was both beautiful and terrifying. It startled me to see how quickly things turned. With lightning strikes momentRead more
