humming in the dark

“Hope means to keep living amid desperation and to keep humming in the darkness.”
~ Henri Nouwen

Before the sun had come up, I heard a bird singing away. Not sure what kind it was but I do know that the song reminded me of Spring…newness, light, fresh growth.

Its song was clear and bright in the dark of the early morning. Made me smile.

There’s lots of dark all around.  My goal today?  To, as Henri Nouwen says, keep “humming in the darkness”, singing in the night, believing for the not-yet, and hoping for the best. Even when it’s still dark.

Lifting up my voice is a choice. Singing has always been a respite, a preaching-to-this-heart-of-mine time to get perspective, and encourage myself to see (and look for) ‘the forest and not just the trees.’   Amazing how a little bird’s song can remind me to sing my own, even when (especially when) no one is listening.  Because sometimes (oftentimes) it might not be as much about the hearers, as it is  about my own heart. Gotta remind myself of a thing or two…steady my heart by filling my mind and singing out what’s true and good and full of hope.

So am gonna lift up this voice of mine, and sing. Even in the night.  And hum. And whistle even. Gonna make a joyful noise, just like my little bird friend.  And remember that there’s a whole lot of great things to be singing and humming and even whistling about, even in the dark.

Blessings ~
Heather

  1. Oh Heather, as I step into an “anniversary” week of my mum arriving “home safe, (we engraved those words on her headstone,) I am so thankful for this reminder to hum, to sing , even as we live in this passing through, not yet land. Thank you. I actually like the idea of humming quietly above any singing out loud, as sometimes as l walk through, humming is about as much as I have energy for! Hope you got some Shalom rest over the weekend?
(I’ve taken a photo on my phone of what you wrote to keep by me all week.)

God is so good with how He prompts us, isn’t He? ( I almost didn’t post it, and am so thankful that He used it to encourage your heart…) I’ll be praying for God to bring comfort and encouragement to you as you remember your Mom. I love “Home Safe”… And yes, will be humming on this side of the Atlantic as well. Hugs, friend. ❤
